next up on mocha and moccasins


It's crazy to think I've had my blog for almost two and a half years at this point. I've grown, changed and most importantly learned so much from blogging, living and from you guys! I want to thank you all so, so much for checking in weekly, reading, or even just browsing through on a random day. I love all of you! I guess at this point it sounds like I'm quitting the blog, but I promise I'm not. It's quite the opposite, because I want to start developing my blog further because I know I have great potential through this and hopefully amazing opportunities will follow.

One thing I'm interested in perusing is blogger collaborations. I know many of you have great content and great ideas too, so why not share them for more people to notice? If you are a blogger and have a similar blogging style to mine, such as one with fashion, beauty, food, diy projects, photography, or anything else you are passionate about, that could be relateable to on my blog, please contact me at mochaandmoccasins@gmail.com and let me know your ideas on potential collaborations.

You may have noticed I changed my layout over the weekend. I changed the header, added a side bar and made other small changes. I've also updated my pages (about, fashion, recipes, beauty) with recent content. Please let me know your thoughts on the new layout! I'm still tweaking it, so if you see something new, I'm just trying to perfect it. I might get a professional to develop a layout for me in a few months because my graphic design skills are quite limited. 

I never really had a set blogging schedule, but I've thought of one that works well for me - Mondays, Wednesdays and sometimes Fridays (I used to do a 'Friday Finds' series with weekly link-ups). I want to share more with you guys, so this is the perfect opportunity.

Food Fantasies


 As I was browsing through my Bloglovin' feed this morning, I came across a post on Cupcakes & Cashmere titled 'Food Fantasies'. Calories and potentially clogged arteries aside, we all have our indulgences and 'cheat foods' and just imagine if you could spend an entire day eating only those foods? Kind of like your last meals before you die kind-of idea!

I would start off my morning with a few cups of coffee (as per usual), followed by every delicious flavor of macaron possible, especially salted caramel and pistachio. For lunch, I'd order a plate of nachos, piled high with toppings and extra guacamole on the side - always extra guac. I do love my veggies, so for dinner I picked vegetable pizza with loads of toppings (olives being my favorite topping) cheese. I'd wash it down with a frappuccino - double chocolate chip or caramel, please (and extra whip, too)! If that weren't enough, there would certainly be room for dessert or night time munchies, such as cookie dough ice cream (I die), Reese peanut butter cups and fresh chocolate chip cookies. Just imagine a Reese cup sandwiched between two fresh, warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies? Heaven on earth.

Summer Eyes : A Pop of Color Makeup Tutorial

 

It's easy to forget about complex makeup looks in the summer, because most people just want to lather on some tinted moisturizer or BB/CC cream and walk out the door. I created this look on a whim, when I wanted to incorporate more color into my makeup. It's simple, quick and can be done with any colored eyeliner. Turquoise was my choice because it is my favorite color and it complements my green eyes.

I've listed and linked to all of the products below, but you can obviously use anything similar you have on hand. These are just the products I have, and if you want more information on them, feel free to ask any related questions in the comments at the end of this post.


  1. Starting off with concealed eyes and curled eyelashes, I primed my eyelids with Maybelline's 24 hr Color Tattoo in the shade Barely Branded, with the brush in my Urban Decay Naked palette. I applied some under my brow bone for a highlight.
  2. Taking the lightest shade in my Maybelline EYESTUDIO eyeshadow quad in the shade Copper Chic, I applied a small amount to highlight the inner corner of my eyes, blending it towards the middle of my eyelid. I also applied this under my brow bone.
  3. Using the second shade in my Urban Decay Naked palette, Sin, I brushed the eye shadow all over my lid. 
  4. Taking my colored eye pencil from Sephora, shade 085 (purchased many years ago), I lined the outer half of my upper eye lid, as well as a small section under my waterline to outline my eye shape.
  5. For mascara, I used Maybelline's The Rocket and Loreal's Voluminous Carbon Black.
  6. For lips, I used Revlon's Lip Butter in shade Tutti Frutti, followed by Smith's Mocha Rose lip balm (link to similar product) for a touch of shine.
This look can definitely be done in under 5 minutes, and I know it's nothing complex, but it does add a nice pop of color to any summer look.

Jungle Style


Sometimes I forget that I have a jungle in my backyard. Not everyone gets to see monkeys and lions in their backyard every morning. Just kidding (obviously)... but yesterday it dawned on me that I've never actually taken outfit photos outside. My parents spend a lot of time on our garden and it pays off - it's gorgeous! If you follow me on Instagram, you know I have a slight flower obsession and I definitely get it from my mom. 


I bought this top last summer from Zara and I only wore it a few times throughout the year. I avoided wearing it because it had a deep neckline and I didn't have the right bandeau to wear, in order to make it work. In my last post, I showed you guys the two new bandeaus I bought from Aritzia and I wore the hot coral one with this top. It might be hard to see it in these pictures, but it's there, I promise!


These are the American Eagle Hi-Rise Festival Shortie shorts that I've worn too many times to count. I love the fit of them and the distressed/ripped look is right on trend. Other looks with these shorts: Canada Day, Big Knits, Homies Hoodie.


For accessories, I only wore a statement necklace. This one is similar to a House of Harlow necklace, but mine is from Brandy Melville (last summer). The shoes are one of my favorites - mustard is my second favorite color, after turquoise! There were also purchased last summer from Aldo. I love the twisted-like straps combined with the regular straps.

Shopping: Aritzia, Sephora and More!

 

Another mall, another haul... sometimes I feel like all I do is shop, but luckily I've been able to cut back because I'm saving for my trip to Montreal in 3 weeks. So, I'm forcing myself not to shop any more until then! Montreal has much more to offer than Ottawa any day. 

I love shopping at this time of the year because many stores are having their 'semi-annual sales' and what better time to shop, than when there are huge sales on? Especially on the summer merchandise. Why do I try to justify my spending problem so much...who knows?

Aritzia: 2 Marlin's Bralettes (or bandeaus) - Bought in 'Neon Citron' and 'Hot Coral'. The straps are detachable and the zipper is a cute touch. [product info here]


 Toxik: 2 silver bracelets - Left one contains many smaller bracelets with small silver beads and the right bracelet is a heavy silver chain with a tag.(no information on their website)

Inglot Goodies

 

This week, my uncle, aunt and cousins from Poland are visiting us. I was excited for their arrival because we have not seen them in two years and their kids are the same age as the kids in my family, so naturally we get along well. I was not expecting any gifts from them, but my aunt presented me with a pretty mint colored bag with INGLOT right in the center. Inglot?! I was surprisingly happy to see a gift from Inglot because I've never come across the brand in Canada, nor have I ever tried any of the products. However, I have heard many positive things about the company through beauty blogs and youtube. 

  

The nail enamel (or nail polish/varnish) shade is 390.
They eyeshadow trio is part of the Freedom System with three mint/teal shades.

 

As you can see from the image above, the eyeshadow formulation is highly pigmented. I don't normally gravitate towards bright colors, but I can see myself using the darker shades as an eyeliner on my upper lash line, followed by a thin application of black liquid eyeliner.  That way, it will not look as intense and it makes it more wearable for everyday looks.


I'm in love with this darker mint shade. It reminds me of Essie's 'Turquoise and Caicos', but with more of a green tint. In terms of color, I think I prefer Inglot's shade over Turquoise and Caicos. The staying power is long lasting and I've only had a few small chips after 3 days (I do a lot of hands-on work, so my nails chip easier than most). The polish has a glossy finish and dries quickly, so you can apply more than one coat in a short ammount of time. In these pictures, I used 3 coats. 2-3 would be ideal, as well as a base coat and a top coat for maximum staying power.


 If I had Inglot available to me in Ottawa, I would purchase more of their products because they have a great color range and I love the pigmentation of the eyeshadows.

Rolo Cookies


There are a few food combinations that I can never get enough of. I'm talking peanut butter and chocolate, avocado, lemon juice and sea salt, and chocolate and caramel. Rolo chocolate candies are the perfect example of caramel and chocolate treat. I have a go-to recipe for cookies. This is a never fail, 'best cookies I've had in my life' kind of recipe - great raw and cooked. I used the same recipe for my Easter cookies, as well as one of my favorites, the red, pink and white sprinkle cookies.


As with the previous cookie recipes, this one was adapted from Sally's Baking Addiction's recipe here. There are many things I've learned about baking the perfect cookie through Sally's baking posts. These little tricks result in a perfectly chewy and soft cookie.

 

The first trick is to add corn starch! Since corn starch is a natural thickener, if it's added into cookie dough, it helps the cookies stay thick and hold their volume. Another important tip to to refrigerate the dough! Since the cookie dough will harden when cooled, it helps keep them thick and puffy.This results in a soft, chewy cookie - aka deliciousness


Rolo Cookies Recipe
recipe adapted from Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies (from Sally's Baking Addiction)
- makes 2.5 dozen cookies (if you don't eat all of the dough)

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar (or light brown - dark is preferred)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 - 1.5 cups of Rolo candies
Instructions
  1. Line an ungreased cookie sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer with paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugars together on medium speed until fluffy and light in color. Mix in egg and vanilla. Scrape down the sides as needed. On low speed, mix in flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. Stir in chocolate chips. Dough will be thick and sticky. Chill for at least 30 minutes (or up to 3 days).
  3. Preheat oven to 350F.
  4. Drop balls of dough onto cookie sheet (about 1.5 Tablespoons of dough per cookie) OR used a standard-sized cookie scoop. Press a few chocolate chips onto the tops of cookies for looks, if desired. Bake for 8-9 minutes, until barely golden brown around the edges. Do NOT bake them longer than 10 minutes. Remove and let cool for 3 minutes on the cookie sheet. If the cookies are too puffy, try gently pressing down on them with the back of a spoon. Transfer to cooling rack. Cookies remain fresh in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
Notes
*Do not drop dough onto warm cookie sheets. Allow cookie sheets to cool completely between batches.
*Cookies freeze well – up to three months. Unbaked cookie dough balls freeze well – up to three months.

Canada Day 2013


Living in Ottawa is definitely a plus when it comes to July 1st - Canada Day.  This year my friends and I celebrated all day long.We met early for lunch at Jessica's house, lounged by the pool and made some delicious drinks. After some relaxation, we took the bus downtown and ventured around the city. There were many festive things going on, including Carly Rae Jepson performing, but it was just way too packed everywhere and with no cell phone reception (due to lots of people in one area), we were scared to lose each other. 

However, walking around in the nice weather was still a great time with great company, too. A few hours later, we bussed back home for an evening BBQ. I'm not a huge fan of burgers and hot dogs, but during a summer BBQ, it's just the thing to eat. Once we finished the food and after my friend accidentally spilled her drink in my lap, (oops!) we walked over to K-hill for fireworks. They were gorgeous fireworks, but I would have loved to see them downtown - now those are memorable fireworks. But there is always next year!
